Staff Reads: January 20, 2017

By

Our blog has been a bit quiet this month, but we’ll be back to our regularly scheduled posts in February where we’ll share interviews with authors and staff, as well as book collections and other behind the scenes goings on. We can’t wait to share with you what we have in store for 2017 and beyond.

And of course we’ll be sharing with you what books, articles, podcasts, audiobooks, and more that our staff has been enjoying! Take a look at what our staff has been reading this week, below. #CRPreads

undergroundI finally picked up The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao and just finished it last night, and it was absolutely fantastic. I also borrowed the audiobook for The Underground Railroad from the library. I have to listen to it quickly, because I started chatting with a woman in line and she decided to put a request in for the CD set as soon as it’s returned. I can’t keep her waiting! —Ashley Alfirevic, publicity associate

franyzooey

I picked up Franny and Zooey by J. D. Salinger on a whim over the holidays. Something about that quiet week between Christmas and New Year’s made me want to revisit an old favorite. Franny is perfection in her own right, but honestly, is there anyone in literature with more amazing one-liners than Zooey Glass? Personal favorite: when he calls his mother a “fat old Druid.” Why these stories were never professionally adapted for the stage or screen I’ll never know. Steppenwolf Theatre, I’m looking at you! —Caitlin Eck, publicity manager

good-omens-2

I just finished reading Closed Casket, the second of the new Hercule Poirot mysteries written by Sophie Hannah. I’ve been revisiting the original Agatha Christie novels—I was always a Marple gal so there are a number of Poirot mysteries that I never read—and this is a welcome addition to the collection. And I’d be remiss if I didn’t shout from the rooftops my excitement over the news that Good Omens is at long last arriving on television. —Mary Kravenas, marketing manager

cider house rules

I’m still working through The Cider House Rules. But I’ve also read a handful of good articles lately. I want to learn some new skills in 2017, so I’m saving this post for when I have some free time. And I also really enjoyed this timely article on gun laws and empathy. —Emily Lewis, editorial and marketing assistant
