In honor of National Teacher Appreciation Week next month, we’ve rounded up some of our favorite fictional teachers. And, of course, there were multiple references to Harry Potter.

In my youth, other kids often mistook my mom for Ms. Frizzle in Barnes & Noble stores, so the muse of The Magic Schoolbus series would have to be my favorite fictional teacher. —Ashley Alfirevic, publicity associate
Obviously so many great educators/badasses at Hogwarts, but Professor Lupin, I mean really… —Ellen Hornor, project editor
Well my immediate thought was Remus Lupin, who was hands down the best Defense Against the Dark Arts professor in Harry Potter’s time at Hogwarts—given the professors he was up against, I realize that is a low bar. I’m looking at you, Dolores Umbridge—and the only one who obviously and genuinely cared about his students’ well-being. He taught genuinely useful spells and skills and laid the groundwork for Dumbledore’s Army, imo. And I’m biased to being a big fan of 75 percent of the Marauders, so Remus is an easy choice.
And in a similar vein, Miss Lupescu from The Graveyard Book, who isn’t as sympathetic as Remus in her introduction and manners as she teaches Bod the skills he needs to survive, and those lessons both save his life and help him continue along his heroic path. —Mary Kravenas, marketing manager
Shout-out to Mrs. Banner, my favorite teacher! For my favorite fictional teacher, I choose Hagrid. Some may argue that he’s the worst teacher, but I like rooting for the underdog. Plus I appreciate how he tried his hardest to teach some practical skills, even though it caused some injuries… I also have to add that my favorite scene with any teacher is the roof-jumping scene with Master Elodin from The Name of the Wind. Is it strange that both of my favorite teachers severely injured their students? —Emily Lewis, editorial and marketing assistant
The most perfect teacher I can bring to mind is Miss Honey from the delightful Matilda. She reminded me of the lovely, caring teacher I had for first grade, Mrs. Taylor. May we all have such champions in our lives! —Michelle Williams, managing editor
