Happy #BookLoversDay! For those who are a bit behind in their reading goal for the year, we’ve compiled some of our favorite books to read in one day. For additional quick reads, check out The Millions recent post.
Middle grade books are great for quick reads with thought-provoking themes. My personal recommendations include Moo by Sharon Creech, The Wild Robot by Peter Brown, and our own Krysia by Krystyna Mihulka and Krystyna Poray Goddu. On the adult side, My Name Is Lucy Barton by Elizabeth Strout is a quick listen as an audiobook. —Ashley Alfirevic, publicity associate
Alan Bradley’s Flavia de Luce mysteries are wonderful read-in-a-day books, and I’d start with the first, The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie. Flavia is an eleven year old detective in 1950s England. She’s a mix of Sherlock Holmes, Harriet the Spy, the Christie sleuths, and Jessica Fletcher. (Given the rate of murders that happen in and around her village, it reminds me of Cabot Cove.) They’re quirky, cozy mysteries, with absolutely delightful covers, that you could easily read in a day. —Mary Kravenas, marketing manager
I recently read When Breath Becomes Air in one day, and I definitely recommend it. It’s a little book with some big ideas. Warning: crying will occur. —Emily Lewis, editorial and marketing assistant
I liked Alan Bennett’s The Clothes They Stood Up In. But it would be hard to stretch it to a whole day. I think you’d finish it in two or three hours tops. —Yuval Taylor, senior editor
