Staff Reads: Our favorite book-to-film adaptations

By

The Arrival, The Jungle Book, and Fantastic Beasts And Where to Find Them  are all Oscar winners Boss BabyThe Bell Jar, and The Dark Tower are heading to the big screen soon. What do they all have in common? Before they were movies, they were books.

We listed our most anticipated book-to-film adaptations last November, but for this week’s Staff Reads, we’ve rounded up our favorite book-to-film adaptations.  Check them out below.

atonement

I remember writing a paper for one of my classes on how modern book-to-movie adaptations affected character development, and I remember being especially happy with the transition for August: Osage County and The Fault in Our Stars. —Ashley Alfirevic, publicity associate

Atonement by Ian McEwan. I love, love, loved the book and wasn’t expecting a movie to be capable of doing it justice. I was wrong. The film is gorgeous, brooding, haunting—all the things the book was. —Caitlin Eck, publicity manager

bridget-jones-s-diaryHonestly, I’ve always thought that the film adaptation of Bridget Jones’s Diary is way better than the book itself. The book felt sort of over-the-top and self-conscious to me, where the film, while it of course has its silly moments, has more of a genuinely warm, lived-in quality (thanks to the delightful performances and the elimination of the far-fetched subplot about her mom). —Allison Felus, production manager

I feel like I’d be committing a sin of omission if I didn’t at least mention the BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice (whew. Done.) but my favorite book-to-film adaptation is probably the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Watching those films truly did feel like the books were coming to life on the big screen. And yes, I’m one of those fans who would totally sit and watch the extended Extended Editions of the trilogy if those were released. —Mary Kravenas, marketing manager

Princess Bride

I read Tuck Everlasting in fifth grade for school and when I watched the movie I thought it perfectly captured that same magical, ominous quality that the book had. Plus I was in love with Jonathan Jackson as Jesse! —Emily Lewis, editorial and marketing assistant

The obvious answer to the best book-to-film adaptation is, of course, The Princess Bride. Any other answer is simply inconceivable! —Michelle Williams, managing editor
